RSS configuration in administration
Introduction and orientation
Connect an external RSS/XML source to an application and configure automatic synchronisation.
Who this guide is for
This procedure is for the system provider’s administrator with the Super Admin role, who creates the RSS channel and application. Customers do not normally perform these steps: they arrange the feed and give its URL to the provider. See RSS application for an overview of the process and responsibilities.
Purpose
RSS configuration connects an external feed to a specific RSS application/template, for example a municipal notice board or event calendar.
Steps and settings
Workflow
- Obtain the feed URL from the customer and check its availability and compliance with the RSS specification. Any XML changes are made by the feed developer or supplier.
- Under RSS configuration, create a channel and set the source URL and update interval.
- Create or make available the corresponding RSS application for the company and agree on its appearance with the customer.
- Arrange publication to the target devices, either by the customer with the required permissions or by the provider’s administrator, as agreed.
- Check the initial import and delivery of a subsequent content change. The system then checks the source at the configured interval.
Synchronization
GUID and change metadata are used to distinguish new, updated and removed items. The administrator therefore does not need to re-enter each item manually.
When RSS updates
Set the Update interval in the channel configuration. The interface offers 1, 2, 4, 6 or 12 hours, or 1 or 2 days. The source code sets a new configuration to 6 hours by default; check the actual setting for an existing channel.
A change to the source feed may therefore not appear immediately. Once the interval has elapsed, the server retrieves the definition, prepares changed media and distributes the update. Source availability, media processing and the device connection can add further delays.
