Preparing an installation USB drive

Introduction and orientation

The installation USB drive installs the player on the device’s internal drive. It contains the system image and installation tools; it is not the USB drive used for regular media playback.

Steps and settings

Warning: Writing the installation ISO file permanently erases all data on the selected target disk. Verify that you selected the correct installation USB drive before continuing.

Preparation steps

  1. On Windows or Ubuntu, prepare an installation USB drive with a capacity of at least 64 GB. This can be an external HDD or SSD connected via USB, or a USB flash drive. A USB flash drive may be considerably slower.
  2. Download the official installation ISO file (.iso.gz): Download installation ISO file.
  3. Select the downloaded .iso.gz file in an ISO-file writing tool such as balenaEtcher. If the application supports it, do not extract the file manually.
  4. Select the correct target installation USB drive and start flashing. The tool handles the necessary drive preparation or formatting.
  5. Wait until writing and the tool’s verification finish, then safely disconnect the drive.
