Overview and explanation

Requirements for your own computer

You can also run the system on your own computer, even if it is not listed here. Compare its specifications with the requirements below and consider the content you intend to use. We use the Linux Ubuntu operating system.

ParameterMinimum requirements for Full HD videoRecommended configuration for UHD and applications
Operating systemLinux UbuntuLinux Ubuntu
Processor64-bit processor; for your own PC, Intel N95 / N100 or a processor with comparable performance as a baselineIntel N97 or higher performance; Intel Core i5 or comparable performance for more demanding applications
RAM4 GB depending on platform; 8 GB recommended for your own PC16 GB recommended
Graphics and decodingHardware FHD video decoding and a working graphics driver in UbuntuHardware UHD video decoding and graphics acceleration for applications in Ubuntu
Display output1920 × 1080; HDMI or DisplayPort to match the screen3840 × 2160; matching output, cable and screen
StorageCapacity for Ubuntu, the system and your content; prefer an SSD for a PCSSD with spare capacity for UHD media and applications
ConnectionEthernet or stable Wi-FiWired Ethernet recommended

Requirements also depend on the platform. FHD configurations can start at 4 GB RAM; the H4 requires at least 8 GB. For your own PC, we recommend at least 8 GB RAM for FHD. For UHD and applications, we recommend 16 GB RAM and additional processing capacity for more demanding content.

For ARM boards, use the system image intended for the specific supported model.

For your own computer, check not only the processor and RAM, but also graphics support and hardware decoding in Ubuntu. A display output rated for “4K” does not by itself describe playback or application performance. For an LED screen, the resolution of the complete displayed content matters, rather than the physical screen size.

Results apply to the tested hardware and software configuration.
